An alternative investment is often defined by what it is not:
traditional investments such as stocks, bonds or cash.

This broad definition makes it impossible to list all alternative strategies.  Just the real estate category of alternative investments may include; land, residential, commercial, timber, retail, multi-family, office, mortgages, including non-traded REIT’s (real estate investment trusts), uit's (unit investment trusts) or partnerships.  Wine, art, and antiques, indeed any business of value, might be considered as an alternative investment.  Others might be hedge funds, futures, commodities, oil & gas, equipment leasing, distressed securities, structured CD’s, etc.

Alternative funds and investments aren't open to everyone and involve special risks. They are only suited to those considered legally "sophisticated investors." This is a narrow definition limited to individuals with specific income and net worth qualifications which will be included in the offering documents.

First Allied advisors at P Inc. may have access to investments that many other firms do not.
